On April 21, 1916, Grigori Rasputin, a Russian mystic and confidant to the Russian royal family, was assassinated by a group of nobles. Rasputin had gained considerable influence over Tsarina Alexandra, leading to resentment among Russias aristocracy. The conspirators lured him to a house, where they poisoned, shot, and eventually drowned him. Despite being poisoned, Rasputin reportedly survived for some time, adding to the mystique surrounding his death. His assassination marked the beginning of the end for the Russian monarchy.
