On October 31, 1961, the Soviet Union detonated the largest nuclear bomb ever tested, known as the Tsar Bomba, over the Arctic Circle. The bomb had a yield of 50 megatons, making it 3,000 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The explosion created a massive mushroom cloud and left an unprecedented shockwave, visible from 500 miles away. The test highlighted the scale of nuclear weapons during the Cold War and contributed to global fear about the potential for nuclear war. Although no lives were lost in the test, it marked a significant moment in the arms race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
