The Minamata Bay Disaster

December 2, 1984

On December 2, 1984, the Minamata Bay disaster in Japan became known when thousands of people were diagnosed with mercury poisoning. The poisoning was caused by the release of industrial wastewater from the Chisso Corporation into Minamata Bay, which contaminated the local seafood. Over the years, many residents suffered from neurological damage, and the disaster became a symbol of industrial pollution. The effects of the mercury poisoning were severe, with many victims suffering from paralysis, convulsions, and death. The event eventually led to Japans strengthening of environmental protection laws.
