The LA Riots (Rodney King)

June 18, 1992

On June 18, 1992, the aftermath of the acquittal of four Los Angeles police officers involved in the beating of Rodney King led to widespread rioting. King, a Black motorist, had been brutally assaulted by police officers in 1991, and the jurys decision to acquit them triggered outrage in the city. Over six days, the riots resulted in 63 deaths, thousands of injuries, and massive property damage. The event exposed deep racial tensions and issues with police brutality in Los Angeles and across the U.S. The riots prompted national conversations about race relations and police reform.
