On June 29, 2005, a series of terrorist bombings occurred on the London public transportation system, resulting in 52 civilian deaths and hundreds of injuries. The attacks were carried out by four suicide bombers who targeted three subway trains and a bus during the morning rush hour. The explosions were coordinated and planned to cause maximum disruption, panic, and casualties. The bombings were claimed by an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group and became one of the deadliest acts of terrorism in the UK since the 1988 Lockerbie bombing. The tragedy led to heightened security measures across the country and deepened concerns over the growing threat of domestic terrorism in Western cities.
