On July 5, 1996, TWA Flight 800, a Boeing 747 en route from New York to Paris, exploded in mid-air, killing all 230 people aboard. The plane was about 12 minutes into its flight when a sudden explosion ripped through its fuel tank, causing the crash. Initial investigations speculated a terrorist attack, but later findings attributed the explosion to a faulty electrical fault that ignited the fuel tank. The tragedy led to major changes in aviation safety regulations and fuel tank design. It remains one of the deadliest aviation accidents in U.S. history.
