The Tylenol Murders

July 12, 1982

On July 12, 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after ingesting Tylenol capsules that had been laced with cyanide. The killings caused widespread panic and led to a nationwide recall of Tylenol products. The incident led to the introduction of tamper-proof packaging laws for over-the-counter medications. Despite an extensive investigation, the perpetrator was never caught, and the case remains one of the most infamous unsolved murders in U.S. history. The tragedy also had a significant impact on the Johnson & Johnson brand and its corporate reputation.
