The 1970 Dawsons Field Hijackings

September 6, 1970

On September 6, 1970, a series of coordinated hijackings were carried out by the Palestinian terrorist group, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), targeting four international airliners. The planes, en route from Europe to the United States, were diverted to a remote desert airstrip in Jordan known as Dawsons Field. The hijackers, demanding the release of prisoners held in Israel, held the passengers hostage for several days. During the standoff, one of the planes was blown up, and the hostages were subjected to intimidation and threats of violence. The event marked a significant escalation in hijacking incidents and led to changes in aviation security practices worldwide.
