The 1983 Beirut Barracks Bombings

September 27, 1983

On September 27, 1983, two suicide truck bombings targeted U.S. and French military barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 241 American and 58 French peacekeepers. The bombings were part of a series of attacks during the Lebanese Civil War, carried out by Hezbollah, with support from Iran. The explosions caused massive destruction, with the U.S. Marines barracks being completely destroyed. This tragic event marked one of the deadliest attacks on American military personnel at the time and signified the ongoing volatility in the Middle East. In the aftermath, the United States and France reevaluated their military presence in Lebanon, leading to the eventual withdrawal of troops from the country.
