On September 28, 2004, a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1 struck off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, triggering a devastating tsunami. The earthquake and subsequent tsunami affected 14 countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, and even parts of East Africa. Over 230,000 people were killed, and millions more were left homeless as entire coastal communities were wiped out by the towering waves. The disaster caused widespread destruction to infrastructure, leading to long-term humanitarian crises and economic challenges in the affected regions. In response, the international community launched one of the largest humanitarian relief efforts in history, providing aid and rebuilding support for the survivors.
