On August 12, 2011, Norway was rocked by two coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by Anders Behring Breivik. The first attack occurred in Oslo, where a car bomb exploded near government buildings, killing eight people. Hours later, Breivik went to Utya Island, where a youth camp organized by the Workers Youth League was taking place, and began a mass shooting, killing 69 people, most of whom were teenagers. The attacks, which targeted government officials and young people, were motivated by Breiviks extremist anti-Islamic and anti-immigration views. The tragedy left deep scars on the Norwegian public and prompted a reevaluation of national security and counterterrorism efforts across Europe.
