The Assassination of Anwar Sadat

February 17, 1981

On February 17, 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was assassinated during a military parade in Cairo. Sadat, who had played a key role in securing peace with Israel through the Camp David Accords, was shot by members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad. The assassination was motivated by opposition to Sadats peace treaty with Israel and his domestic policies. Sadats death marked a turning point for Egypt, leading to the rise of his successor, Hosni Mubarak, and a shift in the countrys political landscape. The assassination also heightened tensions between Egypt and radical Islamist factions in the region.
