On February 26, 1993, a truck bomb exploded in the underground parking garage of the World Trade Center in New York City. The bombing, orchestrated by Islamic extremists, killed six people and injured over 1,000. The perpetrators aimed to topple the Twin Towers by causing a massive collapse, but the bomb only resulted in structural damage and fires that were quickly extinguished. While the attack failed to bring down the buildings, it exposed vulnerabilities in U.S. infrastructure and marked the beginning of an escalation in terrorism against American targets. The bombing was a precursor to the September 11 attacks eight years later.
