The Rodney King Riots (LA)

May 7, 1992

On May 7, 1992, violent riots broke out in Los Angeles following the acquittal of four police officers involved in the beating of Rodney King. King, an African American man, had been brutally attacked by the officers, and the incident was filmed by a bystander. The riots, which lasted six days, resulted in over 50 deaths, widespread destruction, and nearly a billion dollars in damages. The event highlighted deep racial tensions and systemic inequality in the U.S. In the aftermath, significant changes to police practices and community relations were called for.
