The 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

May 12, 2010

On May 12, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, operated by BP, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, releasing millions of barrels of oil into the ocean. The explosion killed 11 workers and caused one of the largest environmental disasters in history. The spill caused severe damage to marine life, coastal ecosystems, and the livelihoods of thousands of people in the surrounding areas. BP faced legal and financial consequences for the spill, including billions of dollars in damages. The disaster raised awareness of the risks associated with offshore drilling and led to changes in environmental regulations.
