The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre

May 30, 1921

On May 30, 1921, a violent racial conflict erupted in the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, one of the wealthiest African American communities in the United States at the time. The incident was sparked by a false accusation that a Black man, Dick Rowland, had assaulted a white woman, Sarah Page. A white mob gathered outside the courthouse, demanding Rowlands lynching, while Black residents, including veterans, attempted to defend him. The situation escalated when the white mob attacked the Black community, leading to widespread arson, looting, and violence, resulting in the deaths of at least 300 African Americans. The massacre left thousands of Black residents homeless, and the event was largely ignored in historical records for decades, though it has since become a symbol of racial injustice and the need for reconciliation.
