The Death of the Rainbow Warrior

May 11, 1985

On May 11, 1985, the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior was bombed in Auckland Harbor by agents of the French government, killing one crew member and injuring several others. The bombing was in retaliation for Greenpeaces campaign against French nuclear testing in the Pacific. The attack sparked international outrage and led to a global outcry against nuclear testing. The French government initially denied involvement, but later acknowledged their role in the bombing. The bombing remains a key event in the history of environmental activism and state-sponsored terrorism.
