The Northridge Earthquake

January 17, 1994

On January 17, 1994, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Northridge, California. It caused widespread destruction, killing 57 people and injuring over 9,000. Thousands of homes, businesses, and infrastructure were damaged or destroyed. The earthquake was one of the most damaging in U.S. history, with an estimated $40 billion in damages. It led to major changes in building codes and disaster preparedness in California.
