The Kobe Earthquake

January 19, 1995

On January 19, 1995, the Great Hanshin earthquake struck the city of Kobe, Japan, causing widespread devastation. With a magnitude of 7.2, the earthquake claimed the lives of over 6,000 people, injuring thousands more. The quake caused buildings to collapse, highways to buckle, and fires to break out across the city, making rescue and recovery efforts difficult. The disaster severely impacted the regions economy, with significant damage to infrastructure, including port facilities and industrial zones. In the aftermath, Japan made major strides in earthquake preparedness and response, but the emotional and physical toll of the tragedy was immense.
