On January 28, 1958, Sabena Flight 548, a DC-6B aircraft, crashed near Brussels, Belgium, during its approach to land at the airport. The plane was en route from New York City to Brussels, carrying 73 people, including the famous American opera singer, Lawrence Tibbett, who was among the passengers. The crash occurred after the plane suffered from engine failure and a loss of control during its final approach, causing it to crash into a field. Tragically, all 73 people aboard were killed, making it one of the deadliest aviation accidents in Belgiums history at the time. The disaster raised concerns about air safety and led to reforms in international aviation standards.
